Savvy sisters celebrate 12 years of trusted skin care

Growing up in a caring family environment with a physician dad, it’s not really surprising that Christine Ashkar-Cohlmia and Paula Ashkar-Aweida would chose careers that help people look and feel better. And, they are savvy. Paula earned a degree in journalism and advertising. Christine has a degree in marketing and international business. Both are licensed medical aestheticians. In 1999, skinRx was founded to fill what the sisters felt was a void. The unique center was ahead of its time in many ways – integrating medical skincare and services with total body health and wellness.

Since 2005, the business has expanded into skinRx & Body Wellness located in Centennial on Dry Creek Road and Yosemite. The space was completely designed and furnished by the owners themselves and has a warm and tranquil ambiance without being overdone. What is offered under that one roof is myriad of services with a natural approach to medical-grade treatment while serving female and male clients from 8 to 80 years old.

As people began to take care of their skin, other issues and conditions were often revealed. Instead of referring out, they decided to bring other superior practitioners together for comprehensive, convenient care. Services include medi-facials, Rx chemical peels, diamond-tip microdermabrasion, dermaplaning and cosmetic enhancement. There is also massage therapy, acupuncture and Pilates under the banner and laser services for hair removal, IPL “photorejuvenation,” fine line/wrinkle reduction, skin tightening, acne scarring and toe nail fungus.

“We fill the void between the medical experience (short visit to the dermatology office resulting in prescriptions) and the salon/spa experience (feel good facial with no long term results.),” said Christine. “This is simply not enough time to educate the client and get to the root of the problem. We take a personal interest, build relationships and trust, spend the time and customize the treatments, as well as the strictly- assessed products from various lines and vitamins if needed.”

Paula said, “The skin is the largest organ of the body. It is exposed daily to toxins on several occasions. Parabens are even showing up in women’s breast tissue. People just don’t know how to decipher ingredients on a label and that’s why we’re here. We are passionate about our results-oriented goals and providing a comfortable, friendly and affordable place in which to achieve them. We also offer complimentary consultations.”

There is a loyal following because of the trust factor. One customer admitted looking radiant enough not to desire makeup even though skinRx also has a customized mineral cosmetics line. Some clients enjoy spending half a day in the center, having treatments after working out.

10 Tips for Clear Skin
(from VitaMedica.com)

Acne and other inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema are influenced by a number of factors including diet and other lifestyle choices. Follow these guidelines to stay healthy and support a clear, radiant complexion. For best results, combine a healthy diet with VitaMedica’s Healthy Skin Formula (part of the Acne Kit featured above).

1. Discuss the medications you’re taking with your doctor. Certain drugs, including cortisone,  androgens, lithium or those containing iodine, are known to cause acne.
2. Eat plenty of fruits & vegetables. Minimize animal fat, fried foods, processed foods and dairy products. These foods are high in saturated and partially-hydrogenated fat, which are associated with inflammation related to acne.
3.
Eat a diet high in fiber. Fiber helps the body to rid itself of toxins. 15 grams of dietary fiber per day is optimal. If your daily intake of fiber is less, consider a fiber supplement.
4. Eliminate refined and/or concentrated carbohydrates. Testosterone is a hormone that can  stimulate oil production. A diet comprised of high glycemic index carbohydrates increases production, whereas a diet high in protein decreases available testosterone.
5. Hydrate your body. It is important to drink plenty of high quality water each day. As an organ of  elimination, the skin requires ample water to maintain proper function and get rid of toxins.
6. Eliminate dairy products. Studies have shown a causal relationship between dairy intake and acne. Consume almond or rice milk instead. Consume products with active live beneficial bacteria cultures such as probiotics to maintain a healthy intestine.
7. Avoid products with iodine. Iodine can exacerbate acne. Iodized salt and products that  contain high levels of iodine such as seaweed, some shell fish and even dairy may need to be avoided.
8. Consider an internal cleansing program. The body rids itself of toxins through several systems including the kidneys and liver. If these systems become overburdened, then the skin takes over. An internal cleansing program helps to rid the body of toxins so that the organ systems, including the skin, do not have to work overtime.
9. Reduce stress in your life. Get plenty of sleep and try to manage the stress in your life by practicing meditation, yoga classes or through simple relaxation techniques.
10. Acne is multifactorial. Acne is caused by a variety of factors including genetics. Work with your skinRx skin care professional to develop an individual regimen to improve your skin.
